
Myanmar delegation led by U Hau Khan Sum, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs participated in the ASEAN Senior Officials’ Meeting (SOM), the Executive Committee of the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone (SEANWFZ EXCOM), the 19th ASEAN Coordinating Council Working Group on Timor-Leste’s Membership in ASEAN (ACCWG-TL) and the 28th ASEAN-India Senior Officials’ Meeting, held in Manila, the Philippines from 7 and 9 April 2026.
On 7 April 2026, the ASEAN Senior Officials’ Meeting focused on several key pillars of regional integration, including the continued progress of ASEAN Community-building initiatives, reviewing applications to and implementation of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC), ASEAN’s external relations and cooperation within various ASEAN frameworks, with a specific emphasis on the maritime sector.
On 8 April 2026, the delegation participated in the SEANWFZ EXCOM and the 19th ACCWG-TL. Discussions centered on further deliberation of the signing of the Protocol to the SEANWFZ Treaty by the five Nuclear-Weapon States (NWS), implementation of the SEANWFZ Plan of Action, and priority consideration for Timor-Leste’s accession to ASEAN.
The 28th ASEAN-India Senior Officials’ Meeting was held on 9 April 2026, and Senior Officials from ASEAN and India exchanged views on cooperation and future direction of ASEAN-India Relations and Regional and International Developments.
During the meetings, the Head of the Myanmar delegation shared the views based on Myanmar’s constructive positions and foreign policy. He also updated recent development in Myanmar and emphasized the importance of adhering to the fundamental principles, particularly the principle of non-interference enshrined in the ASEAN Charter and the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC) in all engagements with external partners as well as for the priority considerations related to Timor-Leste’s Admission as a Member of ASEAN.
