
H.E. Dato’ Seri Utama Haji Mohamad Bin Haji Hasan, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia and the current Chair of ASEAN, undertook a working visit to Nay Pyi Taw, Myanmar, on 9 October 2025. During the visit, H.E. Dato’ Seri Utama met with H.E. U Than Swe, Union Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar at 1:30 PM at the Jasmine Hotel, Nay Pyi Taw.
During the meeting, Union Minister U Than Swe briefed the continued efforts of the Government of Myanmar to restore peace and stability in the country, ongoing negotiations with Ethnic Armed Organizations to achieve long lasting peace, and preparations for holding free and fair elections as part of the country’s path toward building a genuine multiparty democratic system. He also updated Myanmar’s cooperation with ASEAN in the implementation of the ASEAN’s Five-Point Statement (Consensus), and with neighboring countries as well as regional, and international partners in addressing transnational crimes and online scams.
The Union Minister also suggested the establishment of a Tripartite Core Group comprising the Government of Myanmar, the United Nations, and ASEAN, to coordinate post-disaster recovery efforts and support the rehabilitation and well-being of the communities affected by the devastating earthquake in Myanmar.
Reaffirming Myanmar’s commitment as a responsible member of ASEAN, the Union Minister highlighted Myanmar’s constructive engagement in ASEAN initiatives and the ASEAN Chair’s efforts. While reaffirming Myanmar’s continued commitment in fulfilling its duties and responsibilities as a member state, the Union Minister underscored the importance of inclusivity and equal rights, and urged reinstatement of Myanmar’s rightful role and entitlements in ASEAN.
The Foreign Minister of Malaysia expressed appreciation for the comprehensive briefing by the Union Minister. He stated that this visit is intended as a constructive effort towards finding a solution to the ongoing political situation. The Minister acknowledged Myanmar as an integral part of ASEAN and supported implementation of 5PC to achieve durable resolution that is Myanmar-owned and Myanmar-led. He also reiterated to continue greater engagement and closer cooperation with Myanmar.
The Union Minister hosted the Malaysian Delegation led by the Foreign Minister of Malaysia with a welcoming lunch prior to the Bilateral Meeting at the Jasmine Hotel.
